FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions(FAQs)
  • What is Cement? Cement is a hydraulic binder used in construction that sets, hardens, and adheres to other materials to bind them together.
  • What is the difference between Portland cement and Cement? Portland cement is the generic term for the type of cement used in virtually all concrete. Cement as stated is a hydraulic binder made of a finely ground inorganic material which, when mixed with water, forms a paste which sets and hardens by means of hydration reactions and processes and which, after hardening, retains its strength and stability even under water.
Cements when appropriately batched and mixed with aggregate and water produces concrete or mortar which retains its workability for a sufficient time, and shall after defined periods attain specified strength levels and also possess long-term volume stability.
  • How many types of cement does Savannah Cement manufacture? We manufactures the below listed classes or cement:
    • i. 42.5N Ordinary Portland Cement CEM I (OPC)
ii. 42.5N Ordinary Portland Cement CEM II (OPC)
iii. 32.5R Portland Pozzolanic Cement CEM IV (PPC)

Difference between Pozzolanic Portland Cement (PPC) and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC)
    PPC OPC
  • PPC is prepared by adding pozzolanic materials such as pozzolana to clinker, and gypsum.
  • Has higher strength than OPC over a longer period of time.
  • It has a slow hydration process and thus generates less heat than OPC.
  • More durable in aggressive weather.
  • Cheaper than OPC.
  • It is suitable for all types of construction work. For example reinforced concrete casting of buildings, wall plastering, layering, block making, precast concrete and other non-structural works.
  • It has higher resistance against alkalis, sulphates, and chlorides.
  • OPC is prepared from clinker and a slight addition of gypsum.
  • Initial strength is higher than PPC.
  • Generates more heat than PPC in hydration reaction which makes it less suitable for mass casting.
  • Less durable in aggressive weather.
  • Costlier than PPC.
  • It is suitable for specialized construction such a roads, bridges, dams, high-rise buildings, flyovers, railways. It is also used for making grout and mortars.
  • It has lower resistance against alkalis, sulphates, and chlorides.

  • Cement Requirements
  • Chemical requirement :Chemical requirements of cement are those which are attributed to the chemical content of the cement. It includes SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO , MgO , SO3 content that should be present in cement and their respective tests including Loss On Ignition (LOI), Insoluble residue (IR),Alkali Equivalent etc.
  • Physical requirement :Are those requirement cement should possess as per the standard and have to be confirmed through the following tests; expansion test (volume stability), fineness, Specific surface area (Blain Air permeability), setting time
  • Mechanical requirements:those properties which can be tested mechanically like comprehensive strength test, flexural test so as to qualify the cement as per the standard.
  •

What is the difference between Cement and Concrete?
  • Cement is an ingredient of concrete whereas concrete is a mixture of aggregates, water, and cement. The aggregates can be sand, gravel, or crushed stone. Cement acts as a binder, a substance that sets and hardens as it dries. Cement reacts with carbon dioxide in the air dependently and binds the aggregates together resulting to a rock-like mass.

  • How to store Cement
  • i. Do not store bags in a building in which the walls, roof and floor are not completely weatherproof.
  • ii. Do not store bags in a new warehouse until the interior has thoroughly dried out.
  • iii. Do not store in rooms with badly fitting windows and doors.
  • iv. Do not stack bags against the wall. Similarly, don’t pile them on the floor unless it is a dry concrete floor. If not, bags should be stacked on wooden planks or sleepers.
  • v. Pile the bags close together.
  • vi. Do not pile more than 15 bags high and arrange the bags in a header-and-stretcher fashion.
  • vii. Do not disturb the stored cement until it is to be taken out for use.
  • viii. Do not take out bags from one tier only. Step back two or three tiers.
  • ix. The principle of first-in first-out should be followed in removing bags.

  • What are the recommended mix proportions for good concrete?
  • Good concrete can be obtained by using a wide variety of mix proportions if proper mix design procedures are used. A good general rule to use is the rule of 6's:
    i. A minimum cement content of six bags per cubic yard of concrete.
ii. A maximum water content of 6 gallons per bag of cement.
iii. A curing period of a minimum of six days.
iv. An air content of 6 percent (if concrete will be subjected to freezing and thawing)
